The band seems to exist in a bubble, suspended in the moment between Nirvana and electronica; but its out-of-time quality proves to be an asset. — Brian Howe, Pitchfork The four-piece released their second album, 2008’s Into the Trees, on beloved San Francisco label Absolutely Kosher, and they had another in the works when the label crashed and burned in 2011, its debts mounting in an increasingly hostile climate for underground art. But in 2023, label founder Cory Brown (with backing from some of his former artists and fans) rebooted Absolutely Kosher for its 25th anniversary and opened the vaults to reveal treasures galore. Among them was Sybris’s never-released third album, Gold on Hold. Brown contacted the band’s front woman, Angela Mullenhour, to gauge her interest in releasing the record. Though the band members had drifted apart over the intervening years, the unexpected turn of events brought them back together. Later in 2023, Sybris dropped the defiant single “Dead” (with a new video), and in September 2024, they followed it with the full album. Gold on Hold is dark and playful, and though I’m sure it would’ve been considered a banger in 2011, its backstory might make it hit even harder now, especially for longtime fans.- Monica Kendrick, Chicago Reader
