Samantha Savage Smith is a singer, songwriter, and musician from Calgary whose shimmering pop missives, disarmingly confessional yet playful lyrics, and continually evolving sonic aesthetic have made her a go-to artist for listeners who prefer the good stuff from the top shelf. Her new album, Little Place, is set for release in the first half of 2026, and follows a slowly developing through-line that she began with her critically acclaimed 2011 debut Tough Cookie. That album introduced the world to her thoroughly diverting vocal style, which combines the grace and agility of classic jazz singers with an intimately emotive capability that recalls contemporary artists like Alice Phoebe Lou, PJ Harvey, Nina Nastasia, and Land of Talk's Liz Powell. Paired with her intuitive, guitar-based songwriting style and increasingly adventurous production sensibilities, she has by this point fully discovered her own “voice” and is currently in the process of refining and recasting it with each album. “My Friends” is the first single from Little Place, and from the get-go, it sets the bar high, with playful live drums dancing around a programmed beat, before Smith and her band enter the picture. This is a soundworld that Smith and her co-producer, engineer, and drummer Chris Dadge (Alvvays, Chad Van Gaalen) have returned to frequently, and creates something of a theme in her latter day recordings.
