Nakhane

Nakhane (born and raised in South Africa) has emerged as one of contemporary art's most versatile and boundary-pushing voices, moving fluidly between musical innovation, filmmaking, acting,and literature. Their work consistently challenges conventions while creating spaces for profound exploration of identity, sexuality, spirituality, and cultural politics. Their 2018 album "You Will Not Die" marked a pivotal departure from religious constraints, drawing on deeply personal experiences with trauma and featuring contemplative, emotional compositions. The release of their third album "Bastard Jargon" in 2023 represented another evolution – an "existential sex album" that pulsed with physical energy and gritty pop sensibilities. Executive produced by Nile Rodgers, the album featured an impressive roster of collaborators including Perfume Genius, Moonchild Sanelly, 3D from Massive Attack, Raphael Saadiq, and Shabaka Hutchings. As a non-binary artist who has embraced they/them pronouns, Nakhane continues to explore the spectrum beyond binary gender identities. Their stratospheric vocal range embodies this fluidity, transcending traditional categorisations of masculine and feminine expression. In March 2025, Nakhane returns with their interpretation of the Seal/Adamski dance classic "Killer," accompanied by a music video that connects to their cinematic work.
